Religious and social events are all celebrated with fervour by the Delhiite. National holidays are when everything is closed exxept the celebrations :

Independence Day 15 August
Gandhi Jayanti 2 October
Festivals are public holidays, which means that shops and monuments are open, but government offices, banks, museums and the zoon are usually closed.
February - Shivratri
March - Holi (in the mornings –shops are closed; skeletal public transport services)
April – Good Friday, Baisakhi, Ramnavmi, Mahavir Jayanti
May – Budda Jayanti
August – Janmashtami
October/November – Dussehra, followed 20 days later of Diwali.
December – Christmas
